Creating a legally compliant Impressum requires neither hiring a lawyer nor reading the German Civil Code. In under two minutes you can generate a complete provider identification with our free tool.
Step 1: Choose your legal form
Start by selecting your legal status:
- Private individual (freelancer, blogger, hobby)
- Sole proprietorship (Einzelunternehmen)
- Corporation (GmbH, UG, AG)
- Association / non-profit (e.V.)
Our generator adapts the required fields based on your choice. For example:
- Private individuals: must provide their home or registered business address
- GmbHs: must provide the commercial register number and managing director
Step 2: Enter your details correctly
Fill in the fields exactly as they appear in official documents:
- Full name: as registered with the tax office or in the commercial register. No nicknames.
- Address: a physical street address only (no P.O. boxes). If you work from home, your home address is permitted — but it must be complete: street, house number, postal code, city.
- Phone & email: use a professional means of contact. Avoid Gmail/Yahoo for business sites. A dedicated address such as info@yoursite.de is preferable.
- VAT ID: only provide it if you are registered for VAT in Germany or the EU. When in doubt, leave it blank — but check with your tax advisor.
- Register court & number: for companies only. Format: "HRB 12345 (Amtsgericht Berlin)". Found on your register extract.
Step 3: Add optional but recommended fields
Not legally required, but they build trust and reduce risk:
- Website: your own domain (e.g. https://yoursite.de)
- Social media links: LinkedIn, Facebook — if used for business
- Person responsible for content: if someone else manages your site (e.g. a web agency), name them here
These fields are automatically hidden in the final output if they are left empty. No guesswork needed — just enter what applies.
Step 4: Choose language and formatting
Choose:
- Language: German (mandatory for German-speaking audiences) or English (only for an exclusively non-German-speaking audience). Note: the German legal notice itself must remain in German, which is why this generator always produces German output.
- Style: a clean, minimalist layout (recommended) or a classic legal block of text
- Link placement: footer only (standard) or a dedicated page with
rel="noopener"
Our tool produces clean HTML that you can paste directly into WordPress, Webflow or static sites.
Step 5: Download and publish
Copy the output or download it as .html/.txt.
For WordPress users:
- Go to Pages → Add New
- Title:
Impressum - Paste the generated HTML into the block editor (switch to "Code editor" if needed)
- Set the permalink to
/impressum/ - Publish
- Add a link labelled "Impressum" to your footer menu
For static sites (HTML/CSS):
Create impressum.html in the root directory and add:
Step 6: Check compliance before launch
Verify these 3 critical points:
- No placeholders left — e.g. "[Your name]" must be replaced with your real name
- Address is physical — no virtual office, unless it is officially registered
- Contact details work — test the email and phone number yourself
Common mistakes to avoid
- "info@" as the only means of contact (add a phone number)
- Omitting the VAT ID when it is required (ask your tax advisor if in doubt)
- Copying another site's Impressum verbatim (the details would be wrong for your site, and it can raise copyright or unfair-competition issues — though it is not criminal fraud under § 263 StGB)
- Forgetting to link it in the footer (many overlook this step)
Final reminder: update it every year
Change your Impressum immediately if:
- you move
- your phone/email changes
- your company structure changes (e.g. sole proprietor → GmbH)
Set an annual reminder. Outdated Impressums count as a violation — even if the rest of your site is perfect.
